Historical Trauma (HT): Historical trauma is the cumulative, multi-generational, collective experience of emotional and psychological injury in communities and descendants.
“Following colonization and the founding of the American republic, North America's indigenous populations have experienced what I call 'chronic shortages'-a lack of equal access to housing, education, and healthcare. The U.S. government has consistently 'looked the other way' as it pertains to Native peoples. Healthcare outcomes in indigenous communities--particularly as it pertains to mental health--are a problem we must address. My goal with this project is to partner with elders of the Pine River Reservation and develop a facility that houses counseling for youth (accessible to other members of society) to help work through years of historical trauma the American government refuses to address. This facility will be equipped with rotating workshops to teach trades passed down from generations of Indigenous people.”
